Treat The Water

Not the fish

If your goldfish is sick, do you give it some medicine orally? You don’t give it Nyquil. You assume that there is something in the water that is causing illness. Treat the water and you have your best chance to heal the fish. It seems obvious for the fish but not for us.

That’s how powerful your environment can be. Change your environment and, to a large extent, everything else changes. I’m focusing here on your work environment, but the same thing is true for all aspects of life.

There are a bunch of factors to think about in terms of work environment. It seems pretty obvious when you read the list, yet we do a great job of mostly ignoring all of these usually. Let’s try a few:

  • Step away for 5 minutes every hour.

  • Get sunlight for an hour (even if you work outside for the hour)

  • Change the room lighting in a meaningful way

  • Empty everything from your workspace. Total zero

  • Touch nature in some way.

  • Opposite day - do the exact opposite of your routine for one day

  • Try the Pomodoro Technique

  • Pray or meditate or just be silent for 2 minutes per hour (set a timer)

  • Block an hour every day for a week to work on ONE thing (zero distractions)

Lemme know how it goes!
